Tips on Lightweight Travel:

  • Pack light: eliminate what you really don’t need, otherwise you’re just giving it a ride.
  • Sandy and I traveled 2 weeks in Europe many years ago. One rollie carry one and one daypack each. Just walked off the plane and right past everyone waiting to get their checked bags. We beat them to the front of the line for customs checks and to taxis and busses.
  • When you carry your own luggage, it’s less likely to get lost, broken, or stolen.
  • Rick Steve’s self-imposed limit is 20 pounds in a 9″ × 21″ × 14″ carry-on-size bag (it’ll fit in your airplane’s overhead bin)
  • Make a Checklist http://www.independenttraveler.com/packing
  • Start with a small bag! If you start with a bigger bag and you WILL fill it! You will always pack whatever size backpack you have to the absolute exploding point!
  • Be deliberate about your clothing colors: Neutral and matching. Can be dressed up or down.
  • Limit the amount of shoes to you take
  • Layer your clothing for hot / cold temps
  • Roll your clothing
  • Use a travel jacket with pocket or travel vests doesn’t count as a carry on
  • Bring enough clothes for 7 days and do laundry
  • Some cool travel gadgets
  • Rollies or backpacks? I like backpacks (goes over any terrain). Here’s a Hybrid.
  • For carry on: compression bags / ziplocs. Watch the weight!
